Thousand Oaks is the second-largest city in Ventura County, California, located in the Conejo Valley in Greater Los Angeles. It is approximately 15 miles (24 km) from Los Angeles and 40 miles (64 km) from Downtown Los Angeles. Named after its abundant oak trees, the city was incorporated in 1964 after a vote favored the name over “Conejo City.” Historically, the area was home to the Chumash people, with settlements such as Sap'wi, now marked by the Chumash Interpretive Center, and Satwiwa, which hosts the Native American Indian Culture Center. Artifacts such as stone tools and pictographs have been discovered at Wildwood Regional Park and Lang Ranch, where ancient Chumash villages thrived. The area was later explored by Spaniards in 1542, with significant events like the Battle of Triunfo occurring nearby. Thousand Oaks evolved as a master-planned community, annexing areas like Westlake and Newbury Park during the 1960s and 1970s. The city preserves its natural and cultural heritage, hosting museums such as the Chumash Indian Museum.
