Simo'mo ("the saltbush patch") was a nearby Chumash village located upstream from Mugu Lagoon. The region features caves with ancient pictographs, some used for religious ceremonies dating back to 500 A.D. Conejo Grade housed two significant Chumash villages, Lalimanux and Kayɨwɨš ("The Head"), which were encountered by the Portolá expedition on August 16, 1795.
