Camarillo is a city in Ventura County in the U.S. state of California. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 70,741, showing growth from the 65,201 recorded in the 2010 Census. The city is named for Juan and Adolfo Camarillo, prominent Californios who owned Rancho Calleguas and played a key role in its establishment. Camarillo is home to California State University, Channel Islands, located on the former site of the Camarillo State Hospital.

Before European contact, the area was inhabited by the Chumash Indians for thousands of years. Camarillo, along with the Oxnard Plain, was part of the Chumash capital Muwu, situated at modern-day Point Mugu. Simo'mo ("the saltbush patch") was a nearby Chumash village located upstream from Mugu Lagoon. The region features caves with ancient pictographs, some used for religious ceremonies dating back to 500 A.D. Conejo Grade housed two significant Chumash villages, Lalimanux and Kayɨwɨš ("The Head"), which were encountered by the Portolá expedition on August 16, 1795.
